Under the Sea - Sculling Brace Practice

Under the sea
Under the sea
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea
Alan Menken & Howard Ashman

I totally agree with Menken and Ashman - 'Darling its better, down where its wetter'.
Sculling brace; submerged meditation; devotin' time to floatin', no matter what you call it, planned time spent underwater in my kayak is rewarding. Following Warren Williamson's advice, I fall into the water, let myself sink and come up on the other side and slowly repeat it from side to side.

To improve I practice in all conditions.Of course the objective is to gain skills to use in challenging situations but I also find this activity very relaxing.

  1. Beautiful, Tess! I really love sculling and feel that it's the most meditative of all the strokes. I used to be able to scull and roll up on both sides, but have regained only my right. The left beckons. Last year, when the going got particularly rough in my personal life, I regularly called up memories of sculling, of the blade moving back and forth so sweetly in the water - it buoyed me up.

  2. Thank you Moulton. My life has been super hectic of late and I appreciate any time I can spend in the kayak at the moment - right side up, or upside down. I look forward to hearing more about your return to the water.

  3. Hello all
I am just about to start sea kayaking, I am an absolute novice at this form of kayaking, although I have kayaked for many years. I hope I enjoy it as much as you all do.
I guess the first thing I should do is to learn to get out upside down, I may find myself in this position on a regular basis.
I have learned a lot from reading yours and gnarly dogs blogs, keep it coming.
